Safety Instruction While Using Lifting Magnet

Lifting magnets have been around for a long time. Rare earth minerals have enabled the design and fabrication of much stronger and higher-capacity magnetic lifting devices in the last 20 years. Workers must be informed about the precautions to take when using these powerful magnetic devices. Even a little deviation from standard operating practice can result in catastrophic or fatal damage.

The placement of "strong magnet" warning placards on or near the area where the lifting magnet is being used is critical. This will serve as a warning to everyone in the vicinity that the magnet should be approached with extreme caution. When lifting magnets come from the factory, they should already have warning labels attached.

Operators must be mindful of anything in the vicinity of magnets, as they may mistakenly attract carbon steel chutes, carts, tables, pipes, I-beams, or other magnets in a split second. If a worker's hands or fingers become stuck between the magnet and the carbon steel, they can be squeezed, imprisoned, or even crushed. As a result, employee training is essential.

Because of the risk of a falling weight, workers should never stand beneath a lifting magnet or any other lifting device carrying a load. As a general rule, stay out of the way of the overhead magnet, which carries loads from one location to another.

Dropped loads can occur with electromagnets even if there is no total power loss. When the load releases, a split-second power increase is enough to disable the magnet and cause significant harm.

An oily surface on the magnet, which may attract dirt that interferes with surface contact between the magnet and the item being lifted, is another possibility for a dropped load. The workpieces may not be properly engaged with the overhead magnet as they are hoisted from the ground or conveyor belt. Because this is difficult to discern from the perspective of a worker, it's best to keep a safe distance.

Strong magnetic fields can harm some medical devices, such as pacemakers and surgically placed intracranial aneurysm clips. Workers who use these medical gadgets are advised to stay clear from lifting magnets.
